RealArt DeRidder Artist Guidelines

We follow a very open, creative philosophy.
Creativity suffers when there are too many external 'rules' applied to the process ...so we have no rules, just a handful of guidelines.

exhibition guidelines
Please try to have a wire installed on the back of your two dimensional work. That makes it a lot easier to display using our hanging system ...also please don't forget to label the back of your work with your name, title (if any) and price (if any.) Typically, RAD artists will have a maximum of three of their works on display year round. We ask that you bring in one new work, every couple of months, to swap with one of your existing works. Please also label the back of your work with the date you brought it in to RAD. This will prevent RAD from becoming a never-changing museum and may also motivate us all to stay productive.

buying and selling
RAD is a point of purchase for artists. We'll take payment for work but the artist is responsible for any sales tax, etc... If your work is sold because your buyer found it through the gallery, we ask you to donate 10% of the selling price to the gallery. Additionally, if your buyer also happens to be a member of our support group: The RADicals, we ask that you reduce the selling price for them by 5%. So, to make it simple, price your work with a 15% markup and you'll always get what you want from your work. We'll never ask for more than 15% ...and in most cases, it'll be just 10%. Also, if you'd like to, please create a list of other work you may have for sale as well. We'll keep that list in RAD's office for prospective buyers.

censorship
We don't censor. The expression of nude figures is a long standing tradition in the visual arts, as is political and religious commentary. All are welcome at RAD ...but in the unlikely event that your work approaches pornography or hate speech, we reserve the right to refuse to display it.

creative vs. commercial
arts vs crafts
RAD is an arts cooperative, not a crafts cooperative. We accept all forms of art in any media. The general rule is that if you're doing original work (your own design, not from any commercial patterns or formulas) we'll accept it. There are many other opportunities for the craftsman and artisan to show their work but relatively few opportunities for the visual artist to share their work with the community. We want RAD to be a place for those objects that are more art than crafts, more creative than commercial.

gallery sitting
We ask all RAD artists, if possible, to volunteer one day a month to sit at the gallery during regular business hours. This is only a request, not a requirement. We fully understand how some of us just don't have the free time as well as the burden it would put on our artists who live out of town.
